Processing brines to reduce environmental impact

Worldwide, many process- and production-related companies have been forced to minimize their impact on the environment. Governments are forcing these companies to think more carefully about their waste waters by applying stricter laws and regulations. In fact, legislation prescribes that residual streams can no longer be discharged into the environment because it can have a major impact on the environment. 

A good example is wastewater from tanneries. During the processing of leather, a lot of production water is used to which various chemicals are added during the process. This results, after processing the leather, in an effluent with a very high content of organic load and contaminating inorganic compounds, like for instance chromium, chlorides and sulfates. This makes it necessary to process this effluent properly.

Within the chemical and process industry, our Dyvar® technology has already been applied in various parts of this industry. Within this industry, we have seen that bulk salts are often applied in large quantities as raw additives or as reactants. Over the years, we have discovered that because of this, not a single brine stream is identical. Due to the fact that each brine stream has different properties, our Dyvar® technology is very suitable within these industries.

Our Dyvar® technology is a robust and reliable concentrator and crystallizer technology that can treat tannery wastewater loaded with high salt concentrations from the conservation process of the skins and COD from it.  The incoming brines (TDS>85.000mg/l, COD< 8.300 mg/l) are concentrated and crystallized resulting in a pure condensate stream (TDS<100mg/l) and salt slurry. An overall water recovery efficiency of 95% was achieved.
